Job announcements relevant to people interested in electronic structure calculations…

Due to the large number of posts recently, there is currently a delay of several weeks between posts being submitted and the corresponding emails being distributed to all users. Please bear with us while we try to improve this. In the meantime – and until this notice is removed – it would assist us considerably if you could submit only important and/or urgent posts and thus help to reduce the size of the mail queue. Under no circumstances should you resend posts multiple times when you find the emails are not distributed immediately.

In light of the Russian military offensive in Ukraine, we request that announcements relating to events, jobs and other activities associated with institutions supported by the Russian and Belarusian states are not posted to the Psi-k forum.

A fully-funded PhD position is open in the Laboratory of Materials and Durability of Constructions at INSA Toulouse in France. The LMDC (https://www.lab-lmdc.fr/) is a recognized laboratory in civil engineering field (2nd French Civil Engineering laboratory according to the Shanghai ranking), which research activities are centered on the materials science for civil engineering.

The aim of the present PhD position is, first, to investigate the temperature effect on the atomic structure of C-S-H. An improved version of the models available in literature will be used to describe the C-S-H atomic structure. In this part, we project to study essentially the open questions of density, transport properties of water molecules, and the interfacial shear strength between inter- and intra-sheets of the structure. In addition, the viscoelastic and thermodynamic properties of C-S-H will be evaluated as a function of temperature. In the second objective, variable stoichiometry and silicate polymorphism will be investigated (different Ca/Si ratio, insertion of Al, ...). The structural properties will be deeply investigated for a good understanding of the chemical environment of atoms, point defects distribution in silicate tetrahedral network as well as interlayer space and the quantity of water molecules in each C-S-H structure. The viscoelastic and thermodynamic properties will be evaluated for each C-S-H structure and compared to the available experimental data.

Profile of candidates:

• Master's degree in the field of civil engineering, material science, physics or similar;

• Experience with molecular dynamics, electronic structure theory, or modern computational approaches to solids;

• Experience with high-performance computing;

• Strong motivation for science and scientific research;

• Willingness to learn and take new challenges, proactive approach to perform tasks and reach objectives;

• High-level proficiency in communication skills. Strong ability to work independently as well as in a team, social competence, personal responsibility.

Application procedure:

Please submit your application including motivation letter, CV, transcripts of Master records, copy of Master degree and two reference addresses to Pr. Laurie LACARRIERE: [email protected] or/and Dr. Amine BOUIBES – [email protected].

Deadline of application: April 15, 2022
