The Freiburg Materials Research Center (FMF) is offering a PhD work in theoretical materials research (75% part-time job).

Within the Priority Programme 1959 "Manipulation of matter controlled by electric and magnetic fields" funded by the DFG (www.fieldsmatter.de) the FMF and project partners are conducting both experimental and theoretical research on the topic "Processing of magnetic materials enhanced by magnetic or electric fields or currents“".
The objective of this project is to investigate how crystalline structures and chemical orders of ferromagnetic intermetallic compounds can be manipulated by high electromagnetic fields and currents such that uniaxial anisotropic, hard-magnetic crystal phases can be generated in the metallurgical processing, which are well suited for permanent magnets. The project partners of the FMF are the “Functional Materials” group at the Technical University of Darmstadt and the “Materials Modeling” group at the Fraunhofer IWM in Freiburg.

The theoretical part of the project at the FMF and the IWM combines numerical methods of density functional theory (DFT) and Kinetic Monte Carlo (KMC) simulation methods to investigate, how strong electromagnetic forces are needed in order to influence thermally activated diffusion processes of atoms in metals by field forces and electronic wind forces such that a disordered, isotropic ferromagnetic phase can be transformed into an ordered, anisotropic hard-magnetic material.

For this theoretical task as a PhD work we are looking for a physicist.
As applicant, you have got an academic M. Sc. degree with very good grades in Physics, which entitles you for PhD admission at the University of Freiburg. You are skilled in scientific research, highly interested in materials and their properties, well trained (preferably with already some experience) in theoretical solid-state physics and/or computational materials simulation, and motivated to collaborate in an interdisciplinary team.

Please send your application with CV (including all relevant certificates of your academic degrees and grades) by April 15, 2017 by postal mail to:
