A PhD position is available in the recently established Chair for Theoretical Condensed Matter Physics, led by Prof. Alexandre Tkatchenko (http://www.fhi-berlin.mpg.de/~tkatchen) in the Physics and Materials Science (PhyMS) Research Unit at the University of Luxembourg (http://wwwen.uni.lu/research/fstc/physics_and_materials_science_research_unit).

Our group develops advanced electronic structure methods for accurate modeling of complex functional materials (e.g., protein and drug design, hybrid inorganic/organic interfaces for photovoltaics, and nano-electro-mechanical systems). These developments go significantly beyond present-day density-functional theory (DFT) and include non-covalent intermolecular interactions (van der Waals and hydrogen bonding), photonic and electronic excitations, and self-interaction-corrected methods.

We develop hierarchical (multi-scale) approaches combining concepts from intermolecular interaction theory, DFT and quantum many-body theories. Therefore, we are looking for people from diverse backgrounds with interest in advancing the frontiers of electronic structure calculations.

Applicants for the PhD position should hold a Master or equivalent degree, and should have a strong background in theoretical physics, physical chemistry or theoretical chemistry. Experience in programming (Fortran, C/C++, Python) and strong interest in multidisciplinary research are essential. We offer competitive salary and attractive working environment in one of the most enjoyable European cities (http://www.euraxess.lu/var/ezwebin_site/storage/images/home/guide_euraxess.pdf).

For more information and applications contact: Prof. Alexandre Tkatchenko .
