A fully funded Ph.D. position in atomistic simulations is immediately available in a theory group “Atomistic Simulations of Materials” (Group Leader Dr. Arkady Krasheninnikov) at the Institute of Ion Beam Physics and Materials Research, the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf, Germany.
Two-dimensional (2D) inorganic materials have unique electronic and optical properties, which can further be tuned using ion beams. However, the interaction of ions, especially highly-charged and swift heavy ions with such systems is not fully understood. ln the project "Functionalization of Ultrathin MoS2 by Defect Engineering" funded by DFG, we are going to study the effects of ion irradiation on 2D transition metal dichalcogenides with the main focus on MoS2. We will also investigate how irradiation-induced defects could be used to engineer the properties of these materials. The project is going to be carried out in close collaboration with several experimental groups, so that it will give a unique opportunity to carry out a theoretical research in a 'hot' area in collaboration with world-leading experimental groups focused on ion irradiation.
Essential Requirements
• Master degree in solid-state physics, computational physics or materials science with very good marks
• Good scripting and programming skills
• Experience with atomistic simulations (molecular dynamics, density-functional theory calculations) is highly desirable but not mandatory
• Excellent written and oral communication skills in English
• Readiness to work in an international team and closely collaborate with experimentalists
Tasks
• Carry out multi-scale atomistic simulations using time-dependent density-functional theory and analytical potential molecular dynamics aimed at understanding the effects of ion irradiation on two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides
• Develop the dedicate software for modelling the interaction of highly-charged and swift heavy ions with 2D materials
• Closely collaborate with the experimental groups involved in the project
Duration and salary
The total duration of the positions is three years. The salary is based on the collective agreement TVöD-Bund.
