The Atomistic Materials Modeling group of Prof. Erik Bitzek is inviting applications for a fully funded PhD position at the Institute for General Materials Properties within the Department of Materials Science of the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg in Erlangen, Germany. The objective of the PhD project is to use atomistic simulation methods to study the influence of topological anisotropy on the mechanical properties of inorganic glasses.

The successful candidate will hold a Masters degree, preferably in Physics or Materials Science, and have a solid knowledge of the structure and mechanical properties of materials, in particular of silicate glasses. Experience in scientific programming is required. In addition, experience with Molecular Dynamics simulations is highly desirable. Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to work well in a dynamic and collaborative international research environment are essential. The PhD candidate will be enrolled in the graduate school of the cluster of excellence “Engineering of Advanced Materials” which provides doctoral researchers with special training through short courses on experimental and simulation methods as well as on leadership skills development.

The Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg is home to Germany’s largest and oldest Materials Science and Engineering Department and houses the Center of Excellence in Engineering of Advanced Materials (EAM). It is located in the metropolitan area of Nuremberg (3.5 Mio inhabitants), in the northern part of Bavaria.
