The Institute for General Materials Properties of the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) is seeking outstanding candidates for the project “microKIc – Microscopic Origins of Fracture Toughness”, which is funded by an ERC Consolidator Grant.

The successful candidate will hold a Master’s degree in Physics, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field and have a proven track record in performing numerical simulations, preferably using Molecular Dynamics. In addition, a solid background in fracture mechanics, physical metallurgy and mechanical behavior of materials as well as programming skills are highly desirable. Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to work well in a dynamic and collaborative research environment are essential. The ability to communicate in German is highly desirable but not required.

The Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg is home to Germany’s largest and oldest Materials Science and Engineering Department and houses the Center of Excellence in Engineering of Advanced Materials (EAM). It is located in the metropolitan area of Nuremberg (3.5 Mio inhabitants), in the northern part of Bavaria. The Department seeks to increase the number of female research and teaching staff and therefore especially encourages qualified women to apply. According to German law, disabled applicants with an equivalent high qualification will be given preference.
