Job announcements relevant to people interested in electronic structure calculations…

Due to the large number of posts recently, there is currently a delay of several weeks between posts being submitted and the corresponding emails being distributed to all users. Please bear with us while we try to improve this. In the meantime – and until this notice is removed – it would assist us considerably if you could submit only important and/or urgent posts and thus help to reduce the size of the mail queue. Under no circumstances should you resend posts multiple times when you find the emails are not distributed immediately.

In light of the Russian military offensive in Ukraine, we request that announcements relating to events, jobs and other activities associated with institutions supported by the Russian and Belarusian states are not posted to the Psi-k forum.

A doctoral position at the University of Zurich – Institute of Computational Science-  is available in the newly established group of Prof. Guglielmo Mazzola. The position is funded for 4 years.

Simple elements when compressed at planetary pressures undergo physical transformations that defy expectations creating new phases of matter. For instance, hydrogen metallizes and may become superconducting, noble gases develop remarkable chemistry, methane dissociates into diamond rain. Rationalizing the high-pressure physics of hydrogen-rich materials is not only of fundamental and technological interest but it is the current road-block to a robust understanding of Giant Planets structure, origin, and evolution. (see e.g Nature Reviews Physics 2, 562–574 - 2020)

The main goal of the project is to develop and apply a machine-learning powered strategy to scale-up computationally prohibitive first-principle simulations and provide a new quantitative understanding of the thermodynamics of dense material for technological and planetary science applications. The project is interdisciplinary and will benefit from high-level collaborations with other experts in numerical methods for strongly correlated electrons, machine learning for atomistic simulations, and planetary science.

Side-projects at the interface of statistical mechanics, machine learning, and quantum simulations are also possible.

We are looking for talented candidates with background in condensed matter, statistical physics, and numerical simulations. Experience in computational physics or chemistry is required. Some familiarity with machine learning methods is a plus. Very good communication and writing skills in English are mandatory.

The Institute for Computation Science at UZH is an interdisciplinary center promoting all fields of numerical simulations, data science, and high-performance computing. The city of Zurich offers a very dynamic and international living environment and is consistently ranked as one of the world's best city for quality of living by the Mercer survey. We offer a stimulating study and research environment including the possibility to establish high-profile collaborations within the Swiss and international scientific network, as well as a competitive salary.

Interested applicants should send their application documents as one pdf document per e-mail to the following address: ([email protected] ).

The document must include (i) a short summary describing the Master thesis work (max 1 page), (ii) CV including full details of all University course grades to date, and, if relevant, details on scholarships, prizes and scientific papers published or in preparation.

The candidate should arrange to have at least two letters of reference sent on their behalf to the same address. Please specify in the mail subject that you are applying for the PhD position.
