PhD position at University of Hamburg in the group -Theory of nanoscopic systems- on Resonant Raman
An opportunity currently exists, for a PhD position at the University of Hamburg in the group of Prof. Bester (theory of nanoscopic systems). The project is a joint effort of experiment and theory and will be conducted by two PhD students. The theory work (advertised here) will be based in Hamburg and the experimental work at the University Erlangen-Nürnberg. Both students are expected to frequently exchange information and to visit each other’s facilities.
The candidate should develop the theoretical and computational framework necessary for the calculation of the resonant Raman signal in colloidal semiconductor nanoparticles. Starting from "standard" DFT calculations of electronic and vibrational properties of very small nanoclusters, the method should be expanded to treat larger structures, such as encountered in the experimental setup. A detailed roadmap of the project exists.
Application areas will include colloidal semiconductor quantum dots and novel 2D materials.
The newly established group is associated with the physics as well as the chemistry departments of the university and has strong ties to the Excellence Cluster Center of Ultrafast Imaging (CUI) (http://www.cui.uni-hamburg.de/) hosting leading experimental groups on photon science
(DESY campus, http://www.desy.de/index_eng.html).
We expect a Master’s degree or equivalent in physics, chemistry or related disciplines, preferably in the fields of theoretical condensed matter research or quantum chemistry. A candidate experienced with one or more of the following topics will be given priority:
* DFT
* Phonons, vibrational properties
* Optical properties
* Programming.
Applications including a CV, documentation of academic record, a brief description of the Master thesis project and a motivation letter should be sent in a single pdf file to:
e-mail: [email protected] with the subject: DFG Raman
The position is fully funded and can start as soon as possible. The application deadline is April 5th, 2019.
More information about the group can be found at:
