Job announcements relevant to people interested in electronic structure calculations…

Due to the large number of posts recently, there is currently a delay of several weeks between posts being submitted and the corresponding emails being distributed to all users. Please bear with us while we try to improve this. In the meantime – and until this notice is removed – it would assist us considerably if you could submit only important and/or urgent posts and thus help to reduce the size of the mail queue. Under no circumstances should you resend posts multiple times when you find the emails are not distributed immediately.

In light of the Russian military offensive in Ukraine, we request that announcements relating to events, jobs and other activities associated with institutions supported by the Russian and Belarusian states are not posted to the Psi-k forum.

An opportunity currently exists, for a PhD position at the University of Hamburg in the group of Prof. Bester: Theory of nanoscopic systems. The successful applicant will join a research project concerned with semiconductor nanoparticles and how the environment influences their electronic and optical properties. We aim at a fundamental understanding of the excitation (electronic or excitonic) transfer processes between (bio)molecules and the nanoparticle, which naturally involves vibronic coupling. Gained knowledge should be used to help design nanoparticles with target properties. The work calls for applying and developing numerical approaches for the calculation of ultrafast electron and exciton transfer processes between semiconductors quantum dots and biomolecules.

The newly established group is associated with the physics as well as the chemistry departments of the university and has strong ties to the Excellence Cluster Center of Ultrafast Imaging (CUI) hosting leading experimental groups on photon science (DESY campus).

We expect a Master’s degree or equivalent in physics, chemistry or related disciplines, preferably in the fields of theoretical condensed matter research or quantum chemistry. A candidate experienced with one or more of the following topics will be given priority:

  • (TD) DFT
  • Time dependent quantum chemical approaches
  • Programming

Applications including a CV, a documentation of academic record, a brief description of the Master thesis project, a motivation letter and 2 possible names of reference persons should be sent in a single pdf file to: e-mail: [email protected] with subject: Dynamics PhD application

The position can start as early as October 15th. Application deadline is September 4th.

More information can be found at:

The University of Hamburg is committed to employing more handicapped individuals and especially encourages them to apply. The University of Hamburg seeks to increase the number of women in those areas, where they are underrepresented and therefore explicitly encourages women to apply.
