Job announcements relevant to people interested in electronic structure calculations…

Due to the large number of posts recently, there is currently a 3-4 week delay between posts being submitted and emails being sent to the mailing list. Please bear with us while we try to improve this.

In light of the Russian military offensive in Ukraine, we request that announcements relating to events, jobs and other activities associated with institutions supported by the Russian and Belarusian states are not posted to the Psi-k forum.

Subject: Seeking Qualified Candidates for a Ph.D. Student Position

The Physics of AmoRphous and Inorganic Solids Laboratory (PARISlab) and the Laboratory for the Chemistry of Construction (LC2) Materials at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) are seeking an outstanding candidate for an open Ph.D. position starting in summer 2017. Special emphasis is placed on recruiting talented, self-motivated candidates with a solid background in physics, condensed/soft matter, materials science, chemical engineering or chemistry. Experience in programming and simulations (classical or ab initio molecular dynamics, density functional theory, Monte-Carlo, etc.) is mandatory.

The successful candidate will work on mesoscale simulations of colloidal/gel/granular materials, with a focus on elucidating the relationship between the inter-particle interaction and macroscopic properties. Properties of interest include, but are not limited to: aggregation, jamming, relaxation, mechanical properties, and creep. Additional activities might involve multi-scale simulations (from atoms to continuum), data analysis, and experimental tests (nano-indentation, rheometry, etc.). Active collaborations with the other members of the group (both in modeling and experiments) is encouraged and expected. For consideration, applicants should possess the following qualifications or attributes: (a) M.S. degree from a reputable university in a related thematic area and an interest in pursuing a research career, (b) a fundamental understanding of material science, thermodynamics, and inorganic chemistry, and (c) an interest in working in an interdisciplinary research environment.

Applicants with relevant experience will be given special preference. The successful candidate will be expected to take personal initiative to structure tasks to meet project goals, network and communicate with other partners involved in the project, mentor undergraduate students, author innovative/impactful publications, and report results at international conferences. The position is funded for a period of three years. If you meet the above requirements and are interested in this position, please provide by email ([email protected]) a detailed resume, a short personal statement explaining your scientific and research interests, and contact information for three referees in support of your application (as PDF files).
