A Ph.D. position is available in the group of Prof. Caterina Cocchi at the Institute of Physics of the Carl von Ossietzky University Oldenburg, Germany (www.uol.de/en/est).

The project, funded by the German Research Foundation and embedded in a network of national and international collaborations, is focused on the ab initio study of optical nonlinearities in molecules by means of time-dependent density-functional theory. Application of existing methods as well as extension and development of new ones are envisioned.

The ideal candidate is a motivated young scientist with a strong interest in pursuing theoretical-computational research on material properties who has achieved a Master’s Degree (or equivalent) in physics, chemistry, or materials sciences. Proven knowledge of advanced quantum mechanics and the ability to communicate fluently in English (oral and written) are mandatory. Documented experience with ab initio methods such as time-dependent density-functional theory and/or quantum-chemistry approaches for spectroscopy and dynamics is requested. Computational skills including acquaintance with the Unix environment and the knowledge of at least one programming language such as Python, Fortran, C, or C++ are a must. Familiarity with databases and high-throughput screening methods is an asset.

The Carl von Ossietzky University Oldenburg is a young and dynamic university in the north-west of Germany. Located in Lower Saxony, Oldenburg offers a family-friendly environment and high-quality life standard. It is part of the Bremen/Oldenburg metropolitan region hosting over 2.3 Mio people and providing an efficient public transport infrastructure for national and international connections. Prof. Caterina Cocchi and her enthusiastic team of young scientists have created an international and stimulating environment promoting teamwork and individual self-development. The group has a consolidated collaboration network in Germany, Europe, and worldwide.

Interested candidates can apply until September 30, 2023 by sending an email to [email protected] with their curriculum vitae (including personal data, education path, thesis title, final grades, and, if applicable, a list of publications and conference contributions), the transcripts of degrees in English or German, the contacts of at least two references, and a 1-page motivation letter explaining the interest in the offered position.

Selected candidates will be contacted at the beginning of October and invited for an interview.
