Job announcements relevant to people interested in electronic structure calculations…

Due to the large number of posts recently, there is currently a delay of several weeks between posts being submitted and the corresponding emails being distributed to all users. Please bear with us while we try to improve this. In the meantime – and until this notice is removed – it would assist us considerably if you could submit only important and/or urgent posts and thus help to reduce the size of the mail queue. Under no circumstances should you resend posts multiple times when you find the emails are not distributed immediately.

In light of the Russian military offensive in Ukraine, we request that announcements relating to events, jobs and other activities associated with institutions supported by the Russian and Belarusian states are not posted to the Psi-k forum.

The Group of Characterization of Materials (GCM, https://gcm.upc.edu/en/topics) lead by Prof. Josep Lluís Tamarit in the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC, Barcelona -Spain-) is recruiting a PhD candidate to perform theoretical modelling of the vibrational and thermal properties (e.g., phonon dispersion curves, heat capacity and heat conductivity) of highly anharmonic molecular crystals (i.e., consisting of polyatomic molecules). The position will mainly involve the use of advanced first-principles lattice dynamics techniques based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The PhD candidate will be directly supervised by Dr. Claudio Cazorla (https://www.claudiocazorla-physics.com) and Prof. Josep Lluís Tamarit and will provide theoretical support to the experimental multi-disciplinary group GCM.

The PhD candidate should have a completed Master (by the starting date of the PhD position) in Physics, Chemistry or Engineering, and experience in theoretical and/or computational modelling of solids and/or liquids. Experience in python scripting or analogous will be also appreciated.

The conditions of the present PhD position are the following:

Duration: 4 years

Salary: 1st and 2nd years: 16.640 /yr; 3rd year: 17.830 /yr; 4th year: 22.290 (taxes are about 15% of the aforementioned quantities and social security and health insurance are fully covered)

Starting date (approximate): June-July 2022

Location: Barcelona (Spain)

Institution: Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC)

Department: Physics

The PhD funding offers the possibility to perform a short research stay of 1-3 months in other national or international research institutions and universities during the duration of the grant.

Applicants should submit to the email address [email protected] the following information as soon as possible (before the next 7th of November):

- a curriculum vitae outlining the required qualifications and with a list of publications (if any)

- the names and contact information of at least two referees who are familiar with the candidate’s scientific work.
