Job announcements relevant to people interested in electronic structure calculations…

Due to the large number of posts recently, there is currently a delay of several weeks between posts being submitted and the corresponding emails being distributed to all users. Please bear with us while we try to improve this. In the meantime – and until this notice is removed – it would assist us considerably if you could submit only important and/or urgent posts and thus help to reduce the size of the mail queue. Under no circumstances should you resend posts multiple times when you find the emails are not distributed immediately.

In light of the Russian military offensive in Ukraine, we request that announcements relating to events, jobs and other activities associated with institutions supported by the Russian and Belarusian states are not posted to the Psi-k forum.

We offer a Ph.D. position in the context of condensed matter physics. The student will conduct research in the framework of the project “Analogue quantum simulations in moiré low-dimensional materials” supported by the Basque Government via the IKUR Quantum Initiative. The project is in tight collaboration with the experimental group of Lucia Vitali (CFM-CICS, Donostia-San Sebastián). The student will work within the Mesoscopic Electron and Photon System group led by Dr. Dario Bercioux at the DIPC.

The graduate student will have a two-fold work; on one side will develop continuum models for describing the physics of the moiré low-dimensional systems obtained in two- dimensional materials heterostructure. These models will result from a tight interaction with the experimental partners to get the optimal parameters for the models. On the other side, we will collaborate with the two external theory partners (Daniele Passereone — EMPA/ETH-Zurich, Switzerland & Talat Rahman — University of Central Florida, USA) for benchmarking the results of the effective continuum models with atomistic prediction obtained via first-principle methods. Furthermore, the graduate student will get acquainted with the Kernel Polynomial Method besides the abovementioned methods. This is a real space technique that allows obtaining several information in lattice systems that lack translational invariance. The latter is a typical property of moiré systems.

The candidate is expected to have a good understanding of condensed matter physics. A fundamental prerequisite is a knowledge of software for ab initio quantum chemistry methods such as VASP or Quantum ESPRESSO. In addition, a good command of English is mandatory.
