Job announcements relevant to people interested in electronic structure calculations…

Due to the large number of posts recently, there is currently a delay of several weeks between posts being submitted and the corresponding emails being distributed to all users. Please bear with us while we try to improve this. In the meantime – and until this notice is removed – it would assist us considerably if you could submit only important and/or urgent posts and thus help to reduce the size of the mail queue. Under no circumstances should you resend posts multiple times when you find the emails are not distributed immediately.

In light of the Russian military offensive in Ukraine, we request that announcements relating to events, jobs and other activities associated with institutions supported by the Russian and Belarusian states are not posted to the Psi-k forum.

The newly established “Light-matter interactions” group at PSI invites applications for a PhD position with a focus on X-ray absorption and scattering in quantum materials. The goal is to combine model and first-principles approaches to develop new predictive tools that allow to explore band topology and exciton physics. The project is embedded into the collaborative research network NCCR MARVEL (https://nccr-marvel.ch) and offers excellent opportunities to collaborate with leading experimentalists at PSI and at the Swiss free electron laser.

The preferred starting date is fall/winter 2022. Candidates are expected to have good background in condensed matter physics or similar. Prior experience in density-functional theory, many-body methods, ultrafast dynamics, or programming skills in Fortran/C++/Python are an advantage.

The “Light-matter interactions” group lead by Michael Schüler and is part of the growing Laboratory for Materials Simulations under the directorship of Nicola Marzari. The activities of the group are split between PSI and the University of Fribourg, where the student will be enrolled. An overview of the research in the group can be found here

PSI is located in the beautiful north of Switzerland, while the city of Fribourg with its unique architecture is located in the western part. The position comes with a competitive salary, support for travel and commute, and excellent working and living conditions.
