Materials Center Leoben Forschung GmbH (MCL) is an internationally active research institution specializing in materials research along the whole product value chain starting from the materials synthesis, proceeding with the processing of products and concluding with their in-service behavior until the end of the product life time. MCL is carrying out long-term research and development projects in cooperation with a total of some 150 industrial and scientific partners as well as laboratory, computational and advisory services.

The PhD position focuses on the ab-initio based modeling of hydrogen-induced failure in steel. The candidate will perform Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations to study hydrogen interaction with extended defects, including grain boundaries and dislocations, in different magnetic phases of steel and phenomenological models dealing with precipitation formation. The work will contribute to an alloy design concept, which will also be supported by experimental testing. The position will be a part of a joint project of MCL, scientific partners and industrial partners.

To strengthen our team, we are looking for a candidate matching the following profile:

Tasks:

  • Research in area of first principles (density functional theory, DFT) calculations
  • DFT calculations of segregation to grain boundaries and dislocations in steels
  • Writing reports and scientific papers
  • Analysis of results, participation in development and application of segregation models based on DFT results

Requirements:

  • Master degree in Solid State Physics, Computational Materials Science or a related field
  • Basic knowledge of DFT, Python/bash, Linux is highly appreciated
  • Communication skills in English necessary
  • Additional spoken and/or written German skills are welcome, but not necessary
  • Communication and teamwork skills are crucial for the success of the project

Additional information:

  • Supervisors: Dr. Vsevolod Razumovskiy, Dr. Lorenz Romaner

  • Place of work: Leoben, Austria
  • Contract: 3-year employment

Complete applications should include a CV, a copy of a draft (in the case if the thesis defense hasn’t taken place yet) of the highest degree thesis, a complete list of attended courses with grades, a list of publications, contact details of two reference persons. The review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled.
