The VASP group in Vienna is searching for a PhD student and a PostDoc to develop Quantum Monte Carlo methods. VASP is a de facto standard for the simulation of condensed matter systems using the Schrödinger equation (https://www.vasp.at/wiki/). The project aims to develop an auxiliary field quantum Monte Carlo code (see e.g. doi:10.1103/PhysRevLett.90136401) competitive with or even surpassing the efficiency of other Monte-Carlo methods such as diffusion Monte Carlo. First steps are already pursued in the group by a PhD student supported by a staff scientist. Funding is secured within the FWF project “Auxiliary field quantum Monte Carlo in the PAW method” for the next four years.

We are looking for applicants with a Master or a PhD in Physics or potentially in Chemistry. The successful candidate will have basic knowledge of the internal workings of VASP or other plane wave codes, a background in many body physics, and ideally application knowledge using VASP. Good oral and written skills in English are also a prerequisite.

All applications must include (i) a curriculum vitae, (ii) a motivation letter of one page, and (iii) a list of publications and papers, including one or two reprints representative of previous research. All applications should be sent to [email protected]. The selection of candidates begins immediately and lasts until the positions are filled. The initial appointment length will be up to three years, depending on qualification, and can be extended for another year.
