Job announcements relevant to people interested in electronic structure calculations…

Due to the large number of posts recently, there is currently a delay of several weeks between posts being submitted and the corresponding emails being distributed to all users. Please bear with us while we try to improve this. In the meantime – and until this notice is removed – it would assist us considerably if you could submit only important and/or urgent posts and thus help to reduce the size of the mail queue. Under no circumstances should you resend posts multiple times when you find the emails are not distributed immediately.

In light of the Russian military offensive in Ukraine, we request that announcements relating to events, jobs and other activities associated with institutions supported by the Russian and Belarusian states are not posted to the Psi-k forum.

Applications are invited for a number of openings at the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) for the development of theoretical algorithms, software and models for quantum computers. This is an opportunity for motivated individuals to join NPL’s Quantum Technologies Department to work in the Quantum Information Processing group in Teddington (London). The work will be done in collaboration with leading quantum computing companies and Universities.

The roles can be at different levels of seniority from Masters to Postdoctoral level, on a permanent contract basis. The research will be within the following areas:

  • Development of condensed matter theory applications on quantum computers
  • Model design using machine learning techniques
  • Multiscale materials simulations, ranging from ab initio atomic scale simulations to continuum models
  • Collaborative work with experimental teams at NPL, quantum hardware companies and Universities

About you

You should have a Ph.D. or M.Sc. in computational physics, chemistry, mathematics or related subjects. Required skills vary across the roles, and you will need to demonstrate expertise in at least one and preferably more of the following areas:

  • Development of algorithms and software for materials simulations and their application
  • Development of quantum computing algorithms and software
  • Machine learning techniques
  • Experience in the use of ab initio simulation software (e.g. Siesta, Quantum Espresso, Vasp)
  • Device simulations

For the more senior roles an excellent publication track record will be important, as will be the demonstration of the ability to work independently. The senior roles will also require excellent leadership and communications skills, since you will need to mentor those with less experience than you. Across all roles you will be expected to develop commercial and academic collaborations and support any bids we may be undertaking as well as propose your own bids.

How to apply

For informal enquiries please contact Dr Ivan Rungger ([email protected]). For detailed instructions and to apply follow this link.
