Job announcements relevant to people interested in electronic structure calculations…

Due to the large number of posts recently, there is currently a delay of several weeks between posts being submitted and the corresponding emails being distributed to all users. Please bear with us while we try to improve this. In the meantime – and until this notice is removed – it would assist us considerably if you could submit only important and/or urgent posts and thus help to reduce the size of the mail queue. Under no circumstances should you resend posts multiple times when you find the emails are not distributed immediately.

In light of the Russian military offensive in Ukraine, we request that announcements relating to events, jobs and other activities associated with institutions supported by the Russian and Belarusian states are not posted to the Psi-k forum.

Overview:

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will focus on first principles studies of functional oxides and interfaces. As part of our research team, you will apply density functional theory (DFT) to study the fundamental properties of ferroelectric, multiferroic, and multifunctional oxides as related to superlattices and bulk oxide geometries. Specific attention will be placed on the exploration of the role of defects on the above physical properties. Highly motivated candidates with a strong background in physics, chemistry or a related field will preferentially considered. Knowledge of electronic structure methods, specifically DFT, is also essential. The expected appointment will be for two years. Applications can be made through the Oak Ridge National Laboratory application system. Consideration of candidates will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. This position resides in the Condensed Matter Theory Group in the Materials Science and Technology Division, Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Perform electronic structure calculations on the properties of complex oxides
  • Develop high throughput methods and phenomenological models for exploring material behavior in the presence of defects
  • Present and report research results and publish scientific results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements
  • Maintain strong dedication to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics

Basic Qualifications:

  • A PhD in physics, chemistry, or a related discipline completed within the last five years
  • Experience with electronic structure, specifically Density Functional Theory (DFT)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Excellent record of productive and creative research as demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate to an international, scientific audience
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs

Special Requirement:

Applicants cannot have received their Ph.D. more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. The appointment length will be up to 24 months with the potential for extension. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and availability of funding.

Please provide a list of publications when applying for this position. Three letters of reference are required and can be uploaded to your profile or emailed directly to [email protected]. Please include the title of the position in the subject line.

ORNL is an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants, including individuals with disabilities and protected veterans, are encouraged to apply.
