Overview: 

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will focus on first principles-based studies of the finite temperature properties of disordered complex, functional oxides.  This position resides in the Condensed Matter Theory Group in the Materials Science and Technology Division, Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). As part of our research team, you will apply density functional theory (DFT) to study explore phase transitions and stability in disordered materials. Knowledge of electronic structure methods, specifically DFT, is also essential. The expected appointment will be for two years.  Applications can be made through the Oak Ridge National Laboratory application system. Consideration of candidates will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities:  

  • Perform electronic structure calculations on the properties of complex oxides
  • Develop phenomenological models for exploring material behavior beyond 0 K density functional theory calculations
  • Present and report research results and publish scientific results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements
  • Maintain strong dedication to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • A PhD in physics, chemistry, or a related discipline completed within the last five years
  • Knowledge and demonstrated application of electronic structure, specifically DFT

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Excellent record of productive and creative research as demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate to an international, scientific audience
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory  
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs

 

Special Requirement:

Applicants cannot have received their Ph.D. more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. The appointment length will be up to 24 months with the potential for extension. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and availability of funding.
