Job announcements relevant to people interested in electronic structure calculations…

Due to the large number of posts recently, there is currently a delay of several weeks between posts being submitted and the corresponding emails being distributed to all users. Please bear with us while we try to improve this. In the meantime – and until this notice is removed – it would assist us considerably if you could submit only important and/or urgent posts and thus help to reduce the size of the mail queue. Under no circumstances should you resend posts multiple times when you find the emails are not distributed immediately.

In light of the Russian military offensive in Ukraine, we request that announcements relating to events, jobs and other activities associated with institutions supported by the Russian and Belarusian states are not posted to the Psi-k forum.

The Ecole polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) is one of the most dynamic university campuses in Europe and ranks among the top 20 universities worldwide. The EPFL employs 6,000 people supporting the three main missions of the institutions: education, research and innovation. The EPFL campus offers an exceptional working environment at the heart of a community of 16,000 people, including over 10,000 students and 3,500 researchers from 120 different countries.

Data Officer for Digital Chemistry, NCCR Catalysis

Your mission:
The NCCR Catalysis (Sustainable Chemical Processes Through Catalyst Design, http://www.snf.ch/en/researchinFocus/nccr/catalysis) has the ambition to make the production of commodity chemicals and fuels sustainable and carbon neutral, and therefore to contribute to mitigate climate change. ETHZ will be leading house and EPFL co-leading house, with many other Swiss educational centers participating. The mission of the data officer will be to develop a scalable research data management system based on data standardization, storing, sharing, and processing in the field of catalysis research. You will be part of the NCCR management team office located at ETHZ, whereas yourself will be at EPFL. You will be located within the Institute of Chemical Sciences and Engineering (ISIC, https://www.epfl.ch/schools/sb/research/isic/) at EPFL, and will have a privileged interaction as well with the Swiss Data Science Center (SDSC, https://datascience.ch/).
Motivated and qualified candidates should submit their application online before 01.09.2020. The CV should contain the list of technical and scientific skills, previous professional experience, education, copy of the PhD degree and names and contact details of at least 3 references. The motivation letter should highlight past experience which could be exploited for the position and interest for the position. Applications which are incomplete or not submitted in the required format will not be considered.

Main duties and responsibilities include:

  • Drive the software development for the implementation of data storage, sharing and processing pipelines involving all consortium partners.
  • Drive the digitalisation of data and standardisation of formats and contents, which needs to be compatible with existing systems.
  • Ensure the associated maintenance and support, once standardization and software are established.
  • Advise, train and support the participating NCCR laboratories at EPFL, ETHZ and partner institutions in all questions around data science.

Your profile:

  • PhD degree in Science or Engineering.
  • At least three years of experience in software-related positions (building systems within the scope of a graduate degree counts towards these three years) with validated experience in large software architectures, data management and digitalisation.
  • A previous experience in data science related to molecular sciences (chemistry, chemical engineering, materials, biology) is a strong asset.
  • Capable of participating in multi-disciplinary teams involving participants with very low data management knowledge. Eagerness to perform training, support and maintenance work.
  • Ability to conduct independent work and to work in a team as required by the task at hand.
  • Excellent verbal English communication skills. Knowledge of French and German is an asset.
  • Travel attitude (mainly within Switzerland: the NCCR central office will in particular have regular meetings in ETHZ in Zurich).

We offer:

  • A unique occasion to participate to solving one of the major societal challenge of this century: a carbon neutral society.
  • An opportunity to contribute to the growth of the emerging field of digital chemistry.
  • A stimulating work environment including multiple research groups at EPFL, ETHZ, IBM, Swiss universities and applied universities and multiple partners in data science.
  • Access to many continuing education courses.
  • A competitive salary commensurate with skills and experience, and subject to EPFL pay scale. EPFL is an equal-opportunity employer.
  • EPFL and ETHZ are international and world-class universities. They offer state-of-the-art facilities, scientific events and training and hosts a vibrant entrepreneurial community. Candidates will be recruited on merit only.

Start date: as soon as possible

Term of employment: Unlimited (CDI)

Work rate: 100%

Remark: Only candidates who applied through EPFL website or our partner Jobup’s website will be considered.
