***In order to be considered for this position, all job seekers must create an ORNL profile at http://www.ornl.gov/careers and submit an application.***

Purpose:
We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to develop and apply scalable, multiple scattering methods for ab initio electronic structure calculations in condensed matter systems. In this role, you will collaborate with a variety of researchers developing and applying state-of-the-art electronic structure methods for materials. This position resides in the Materials Theory Group in the Materials Science and Technology Division (MSTD), Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

Major Duties /  Responsibilities:
As part of our research team, you will join efforts to expand the capabilities of the first principles multiple scattering theory codes, including full potential Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker (KKR) and the scalable Locally Self-consistent Multiple Scattering (LSMS) method codes that are being developed at ORNL. You’ll have the opportunity to use ORNL’s Leadership Computational Facility (OLCF) to apply and extend these methods to the calculation of material properties that are currently inaccessible to most existing ab initio codes. You’ll also explore the importance of relativistic effects and the incorporation of methods for including the effects of strong correlation that go beyond local approximations (LDA or GGA) to the exchange correlation functional.

Other responsibilities of this position include:
• Presenting and report research results and publish scientific results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner
• Ensuring compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements
• Maintaining a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics

Basic Qualifications:
• A PhD in theoretical condensed matter physics, quantum chemistry, applied mathematics, or a related discipline completed within the last five years.
• Background in the development, implementation, and application of electronic structure methods.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience in developing and programming multiple scattering theory methods (Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker) for electronic structure calculations.
• Experience in relativistic quantum mechanics in solid state systems.
• Programming experience in Fortran and C++ , particularly with parallel programming on large-scale facilities.
• An excellent record of productive and creative research as demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals
• Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate in English to an international scientific audience
• Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative and frequently interacting teams of researchers
• Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs

Other Information:
The appointment length will be up to 24 months with the potential for extension. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and availability of funding.

How to Apply:
Here is a direct link for the application: http://bit.ly/2gX8EkN. In order to be considered for this position, all job seekers must create an ORNL profile at http://www.ornl.gov/careers and submit an application.

ORNL is an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants, including individuals with disabilities and protected veterans, are encouraged to apply.
