Multiple theoretical/computational PhD positions will be open in 2017-2018 in the Department of Chemistry at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, USA. Research positions entail developing new theoretical and computational tools for studying potential energy landscapes and strongly correlated systems. More specifically, the Stratt Group is seeking students interested in understanding the dynamics of molecules in ordinary and supercooled liquids, with a focus on using statistical mechanics to discern the mechanisms of ultrafast -- and ultraslow -- molecular motion in a variety of condensed phase contexts. The Rubenstein Group is seeking students interested in harnessing the power of a variety of electronic structure methods commonly used in the physics community to study strongly correlated molecular and solid state systems.

Applications are welcome for 5-year positions that will culminate in a PhD. If interested, please feel free to visit the department website at: https://www.brown.edu/academics/chemistry/. Applications are due by December 15th, 2016. Our application and fee waivers (for selected students) may be found at: https://www.brown.edu/academics/chemistry/graduate-studies .

Brown University is an Ivy League University located in Providence, RI, roughly one hour from Boston and three hours from New York City. The Brown University Chemistry Department is distinctive for its research focused setting and relatively small class sizes (7-20). The department houses over 20 active research groups, all of which publish in top-tier journals on a regular basis. Graduate students typically graduate in 5.5 years and obtain a wide range of jobs in academia, the government, and the corporate world; many alumni now hold top university professorships and private positions. During their graduate years, students become a part of a larger department community by attending bi-weekly seminar series featuring nationally-regarded researchers and social events organized by the Chemistry Graduate Student Council. The department offers an extremely competitive stipend $32,500 and a wide range of benefits. The Brown University Chemistry Department is also devoted to diversity and inclusion, and welcomes students of all backgrounds. The University also boasts a unique Open Graduate Program, in which Brown PhD students are given the opportunity to pursue a Master’s Degree in a secondary field, free of charge (https://www.brown.edu/academics/gradschool/opengraduateeducation). University fellowships are furthermore available for the most competitive students.
