Job announcements relevant to people interested in electronic structure calculations…

Due to the large number of posts recently, there is currently a delay of several weeks between posts being submitted and the corresponding emails being distributed to all users. Please bear with us while we try to improve this. In the meantime – and until this notice is removed – it would assist us considerably if you could submit only important and/or urgent posts and thus help to reduce the size of the mail queue. Under no circumstances should you resend posts multiple times when you find the emails are not distributed immediately.

In light of the Russian military offensive in Ukraine, we request that announcements relating to events, jobs and other activities associated with institutions supported by the Russian and Belarusian states are not posted to the Psi-k forum.

Institut National de la Recherche Scientifique (INRS) is a research intensive university, focused to contribute to the development of society through the discoveries and the training of a new generation contributing to the scientific, social and technological innovation. As a graduate level university, INRS maintains stringent admission criteria for research students. INRS ranks first in Quebec and second in Canada in terms of research intensity, which is measured as the research funding obtained per faculty member and per member of the student community.

Project title: Understanding the origin and dynamics of cracks in silicon nitride (SiN) via molecular dynamics simulations for applications in telecommunications and biosensing

Project description: The selected candidate will join a dynamic team dedicated to addressing the scientific and technological hurdles in realizing a distinctive and high-performing SiN photonic platform. This project aims to explore its potential applications in areas such as biosensing and telecommunications. The focus of this PhD program will be to investigate the impact of stress on film formation, as well as the propagation and time evolution of micro-cracks, utilizing state-of-the-art classical molecular dynamics simulations at the atomic scale. The appointed individual will enjoy the advantage of accessing cutting-edge computational resources and engaging in collaborative ventures with leading experts in the field.

Research area: Computational materials design, Sustainable energy applications, Photonics, Classical mechanics, Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations, Special Quasi-random Structures (SQS) analysis

Starting date: Fall 2023 or winter 2024

Research advisor: Prof. Kulbir Ghuman and Prof. Mohamed Chaker

Institution: Centre Énergie Matériaux Télécommunications de l’INRS, 1650 Boulevard Lionel-Boulet, Varennes, Quebec, J3X 1P7, Canada

Financial support: All students are entitled to receive financial support during their graduate studies. Moreover, students are also invited to apply for external scholarships from FRQNT, NSERC, etc.

Eligibility: Applicant should have a degree (M.Sc.) in Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry, or equivalent and must be fluent in English or French (orally as well as in written). He/She should be able to work independently as well as with a team. His/Her ability to demonstrate critical and independent thinking will be invaluable assets.

How to apply: Interested candidates should send a detailed CV, cover letter, academic records, statement of interest, and the contact details of two references at [email protected]  Please mention if you are an international or a domestic (Canadian citizen/ permanent resident) candidate.
