Overview:  We are seeking two Senior R&D Staff Members for the Microstructural Evolution Modeling Group in the Materials Theory, Modeling & Simulation Section, Materials Science and Technology Division (MSTD), Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). As part of our research team, you will develop, and apply advanced materials models and machine learning techniques to understand microstructural evolution during solidification and processing, the design of structural materials, and/or understanding the response of materials to extreme environments.

 

MSTD conducts fundamental and applied materials research for basic energy sciences programs and a variety of energy technologies, including energy efficiency, renewable energy, transportation, conservation, fossil energy, fusion energy, nuclear power, and space exploration. The selected candidates will be part of the Materials Theory, Modeling, and Simulation Section, which applies advanced computational and data analytic techniques to enable fundamental understanding and predictive control of new materials synthesis, fabrication and characterization across length scales. Selection will be based on qualifications, relevant experience, skills, and education.

 

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Participate in the initiation of new research directions and development of research proposals to compete for internal and external funding.
  • Maintain effective communications concerning scientific efforts internal and external to the laboratory, including publication of results in peer-reviewed journals and presentation of results at scientific meetings.
  • Independently plan, design and execute computational research
  • Develop research leadership in key thrusts areas of computational modeling and design of structural materials
  • Coach and mentor early career staff

 

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. with a minimum of 6 years relevant experience, a M.S. with a minimum of 12-year experience or a B.S. with 15-years of experience.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Expertise in any of the fields of crystal plasticity theory, machine learning as it relates to additive manufacturing, fundamentals of structural materials, modeling and understanding alloys, modeling of radiation damage
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory 
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
