Empa as a research institute with high computational requirements has a user contract with CSCS, the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre. Our scientists have access to shared high-performance computational infrastructure at the User Lab of CSCS.

Your Tasks

Coordination for HPC tasks with the CSCS and resource management

You are the Empa key contact person for all aspects regarding CSCS. As a coordinator you will manage the following aspects: Classification of Empa resources at CSCS, provision of computing and storage quotas to Empa groups, evaluation of usage reports, creation of CPU/GPU classification for upcoming quota period.

As contact person for Empa HPC users you are ensuring the flow of information from CSCS to Empa users, you give assistance with general usage problems, documentation and training of new users. For CSCS you are the key contact person at Empa. Within the framework of the Empa/CSCS user contract you are the representative of all Empa users.

HPC Software (Scientific IT) expert

As an HPC expert you will manage and coordinate the efficient use of CSCS resources through Empa users. You will support Empa scientists by porting existing and future software to the CSCS infrastructure and will be responsible for optimization of existing software to the CSCS architecture (GPU programming). You are responsible for further development and implementation of methods and tools for efficient data management, documentation and long-term archiving of large amounts of data. Further responsibilities include the management and maintenance of the Empa software catalogue (versioning, documentation, publication).

Your Profile

You have a university degree (MSc degree) in computational science, or a related scientific discipline (including Scientific Computing). You have demonstrated experience in project management (HPC and/or Scientific IT). You are a team player and your strengths include taking personal responsibility, high motivation for excellence, flair for elaborating out-of-the-box solutions. Strong interpersonal and communication skills are essential alongside the ability to collaborate with peers and scientific partners. The applicant should have excellent communication skills in English and German.

We offer a challenging position at a research institution with excellent infrastructure and broad interdisciplinary surroundings. The working place is Dübendorf (a few hundred meters from Zurich).
