Job announcements relevant to people interested in electronic structure calculations…

Due to the large number of posts recently, there is currently a delay of several weeks between posts being submitted and the corresponding emails being distributed to all users. Please bear with us while we try to improve this. In the meantime – and until this notice is removed – it would assist us considerably if you could submit only important and/or urgent posts and thus help to reduce the size of the mail queue. Under no circumstances should you resend posts multiple times when you find the emails are not distributed immediately.

In light of the Russian military offensive in Ukraine, we request that announcements relating to events, jobs and other activities associated with institutions supported by the Russian and Belarusian states are not posted to the Psi-k forum.

The chair in Computational Materials Design at the Helmut-Schmidt-University (Prof. Kramer) invites applications for a PhD position, fully funded for three years.

We seek a motivated and creative person eager to take on a new scientifc challenge to strengthen our team in the area of ab initio modelling and data science. The english-speaking chair offers an international and unique environment. We combine combinatorial synthesis of functional materials (by physical vapour deposition - PVD) with automated materials modelling to develop and optimise materials for fuel cells, electrolysers and batteries.

Responsibilities:

  • Researching electrochemical processes in fuel cells, electrolysers, and/or batteries with DFT
  • Creation of workflows to automate property prediction
  • Usage of Data Science methods to integrate modelling with experimental datasets from our PVD lab
  • Scientific leadership in data management and visualisation
  • Supporting the chair in delivering it's english-speaking teaching at Bachelor and Master level
  • Engagement in teaching delivery (approx. 3 hours per week during term-time)
  • Contributions to academic administation and other general academic activities

Required Qualifications:

  • A very good, succefully completed or soon to be completed, and internationally recognised university degree [master or equivalent] in a relevant natural science or engineering discipline (e.g., Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science, Engineering, Computer Science)
  • Very good English skills and a willingness to learn German

What we look for:

  • Strong interest in functional materials and interfaces, alternative energies and digital research methods in chemistry and physics
  • Interest and ideally prior experience in atomistic modelling and digital research frontiers such as data science and data mining
  • Interest to work with HPC enviroments and coding skills
  • Desire to publish highest quality research papers and actively contribute to the international scientifc dialog
  • Self-driven, team-plater and good communicator in a multi-disciplinary environment
  • Experience with combinatorial synthesis and/or thin film techniques and UHV environments would be considered a strong benefit

Important for you:

  • Exceptional infrastructure with access to multiple HPC clusters (incl. a brand new state-of-the-art cluster at the university)
  • Access to unique lab infrastructure incl. our new combinatorial PVD cluster tool, a PetaByte Data Store, and our new X-Ray CT lab
  • A collaborative and international research environment, including opportunity to closely work with collegues at the Helmholtz Institute Hereon or the University of Southampton (UK)
  • An interesting and growing research area, the opportunity to develop thought-after skills in future technologies as well as digital research methods

Please contact Prof Kramer ([email protected]) if you have further scientific question. The official job advert has further detail regarding conditions and the application process: https://www.hsu-hh.de/karriere/wp-content/uploads/sites/658/2022/04/Kennziffer-MB-1322.pdf
