Job announcements relevant to people interested in electronic structure calculations…

Due to the large number of posts recently, there is currently a delay of several weeks between posts being submitted and the corresponding emails being distributed to all users. Please bear with us while we try to improve this. In the meantime – and until this notice is removed – it would assist us considerably if you could submit only important and/or urgent posts and thus help to reduce the size of the mail queue. Under no circumstances should you resend posts multiple times when you find the emails are not distributed immediately.

In light of the Russian military offensive in Ukraine, we request that announcements relating to events, jobs and other activities associated with institutions supported by the Russian and Belarusian states are not posted to the Psi-k forum.

Exploration of functional and mechanical properties in multiple-principal element alloys/high-entropy alloys with atomistic simulations and data-driven methods: PhD (3 years 29.87 hours/week TV-L 12/13) or Post-doc (2 years 39.83 hours/week TV-L 13) position at ICAMS, Ruhr University Bochum, Germany.

The department for Atomistic Modelling and Simulation at the Interdisciplinary Centre for Advanced Materials Simulation (ICAMS) at Ruhr-Universität Bochum (RUB), Germany, invites applications for PhD candidates (m/f/d) or post-docs (m/f/d) to explore the phase stability, functional and mechanical properties in refractory- and noble-metal-based multiple-principal element alloys with atomistic simulations and data-driven methods. The project will be carried out in close collaboration with experiment (research group of Professor Alfred Ludwig).

The successful candidate (m/f/d) will perform high-throughput atomistic simulations, combined with empirical materials models, statistical analysis and machine learning (supervised and unsupervised learning and generative models) on diverse datasets both from simulations and experiments. This will guide the development of data science tools for the design of novel multiple-principal element alloys with outstanding properties.

Interested candidates (m/f/d) should have good knowledge in condensed-matter physics, materials science, data science, or software engineering. Experience with common machine-learning tools in Python (scikit-learn, Tensorflow, Keras, etc.) and/or electronic structure/atomistic simulation codes (e.g. VASP, FHI-aims, LAMMPS) is highly desirable.

Requirements:
- Master degree/Ph.D. in Physics with focus computational solid state physics, Chemistry, Materials Science or related discipline (e.g. Mathematics or Computer science)
- Strong programming skills or ability to quickly learn it from advanced practice
- Curiosity and motivation to work in the emerging interdisciplinary field of materials informatics
- Good oral and written communication skills in English for collaboration with experimentalists, presenting the work and writing publications

The Ruhr-Universität Bochum is one of the leading research universities in Germany. The university draws its strengths from both the diversity and the proximity of scientific and engineering disciplines on a single, coherent campus. This highly dynamic setting enables students and researchers to work across traditional boundaries of academic subjects and faculties.

ICAMS is an international research center at RUB, which focuses on the development and application of a new generation of simulation tools for multi-scale materials modelling.

We are looking forward to your application including your CV, publication list, a statement of research interests, and the contact details of at least two referees.
Please send your documents to [email protected]. The application deadline is 18.10.2019

At Ruhr-Universität Bochum, we wish to promote careers of women in areas in which they are underrepresented, and we would therefore like to encourage female candidates to send us their applications. Applications by suitable candidates with severe disabilities and other applicants with equal legal status are likewise most welcome.

Travel expenses for interviews cannot be refunded.
