HZG is one of the 19 national institutions of the Hermann von Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres e.V. (HGF). Around 1,000 employees carry out basic research and development work in close cooperation with national and international research institutions, research-oriented clinics and economic and public institutions.

At the Institute of Materials Research some 200 scientists conduct research in the five sub-institutes "Materials Mechanics", "Materials Physics", "Materials Technology", "Magnesium Innovation Centre MagIC" and "Metallic Biomaterials".

The Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht (HZG) operates an outstation at DESY in Hamburg and provides access to highly brilliant synchrotron radiation to its own researchers and guests within its German Engineering Materials Science Center (GEMS – http://gems.hzg.de). An emphasis is on unique sample environments for in situ measurements to observe materials under operation and processing conditions. An actual research topic is the microstructure and phase formation of titanium aluminide alloys during powder bed based additive manufacturing processes.

For this research we are looking for a doctoral student (m/f/d) doing experimental investigations at Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht and Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY) Hamburg. The position is initially limited to three years.

Your tasks

  • setting up a new in situ sample environment for powder bed based additive manufacturing together with other HZG scientists
  • performing in situ tests to elucidate the influence of additive manufacturing process conditions on different titanium aluminide alloys
  • evaluating diffraction data using advanced methods as e.g. Rietveld refinement and texture analysis
  • performing additional microstructure characterization using analytical electron microscopy
  • performing mechanical tests (e.g. tensile or compressive strength)
  • presenting and publishing scientific results

Your profile

  • university degree in physics, materials science or a related discipline qualifying for a doctoral degree at a German university
  • experience with metallic materials and X-ray diffraction techniques will be beneficial
  • skills in experimental techniques as metallographic specimen preparation, microscopy, analysis of large amounts of data is appreciated
  • ability to interact with an international team
  • excellent communication skills
  • very good English language skills; German language skills will be an asset
