Assistant Scientist (Job ID 953):

Requires a PhD in physics, chemistry, materials science, computer science or applied mathematics with a strong record of research experience, including the development of data analysis techniques and the associated software, and the ability to exploit emerging deep learning techniques. Research projects will be directed to the challenges posed by the analysis of large scientific datasets. Examples from current CFN facilities include advanced in situ imaging of dynamical processes in transmission electron microscopy, four dimensional data from X-ray scattering measured at the National Synchrotron Light Source (II), and more generally multi-modal data interpretation across the emerging suite of in situ / operando experimental facilities, supported by physical theory and simulation. The successful candidate will develop a portfolio of collaborations with CFN scientists and users. This work will build on pilot projects directed to deep learning for the analysis and interpretation of materials science data and to guide efficient data acquisition. The candidate will have the opportunity for strong interaction with the researchers from the Computational Science Initiative at BNL, our partner with expertise in next-generation hardware, software and applied mathematics. The successful candidate will develop independent research ideas to address the scientific data analysis challenges emerging at the CFN with the opportunity to have significant impact on the suite of tools needed to solve frontier problems in nanoscience and nanotechnology.

Application procedure: See on-line listings and instructions at http://www.bnl.gov/cfn/jobs.
