Applications are invited for a 3-year PhD position within the Institute of Theoretical Solid State Physics (ITF) of IFW Dresden: https://www.ifw-dresden.de/institutes/itf/ .
The main research topic will be the interplay of strong spin-orbit interactions and electron correlation effects in 5d in 4d transition-metal compounds (oxides, halides etc.), with focus on highly anisotropic magnetic couplings such as the Kitaev exchange. Ab initio computational methods initially developed and traditionally employed in molecular quantum chemistry will be used, continuing earlier work carried out within our group [see, e.g., Nature Commun. 6, 7306 (2015), Nature Commun. 7, 10273 (2016), Scientific Reports 6, 37925 (2016)].
The candidate should have a strong background in condensed matter physics and/or theoretical chemistry and an excellent academic record. The appointment will start at the earliest, after a suitable candidate has been chosen. The selection process will start right away, until the position is filled.
