A PhD Student or PostDoc position is available immediately in the group of Arkady Krasheninnikov at Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf, Germany. The employment contract  is limited to two years for PostDoc position and for three years for PhD Student position. The successful candidate is expected to start the job as soon as possible.

Requirements:

Postdoc:

  • PhD degree or equivalent in solid-state physics or materials science
  • Extensive experience in using atomistic simulations at the density functional theory (DFT) level, preferably with knowledge of time-dependent DFT and Ehrenfest dynamics
  • No prior experience in simulations of irradiation effects in solids is required, but is desirable
Experience in using/developing DFT code GPAW is a bonus, alongwith good scripting and programming experience

PhD student:

  • Master's degree in solid-state physics or materials science
  • Good knowledge of advanced quantum mechanics and solid state physics
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Experience with atomistic simulation codes such as VASP, GPAW, LAMMPS is highly desirable, as well as good scripting and programming

Tasks:

The primary focus of the project work will be using atomistic simulations at the density functional theory, tight-binding and empirical potential  Ievels to study the effects of ion and electron irradiation on two-dimensional materials such as graphene or transition metal
di-chalcogenides, as well as bulk solids. Development of new simulation approaches based on time-dependent density-functional theory and Ehrenfest dynamics is planned. The project will involve extensive collaborations with the experimental groups at the Ion Beam Center (HZDR), and also external collaborations with several TEM experimental groups in Germany, Japan and UK, as well as theory groups in Germany (TU Dresden), Finland (Aalto University) and Denmark (DTU). The collaborations have already resulted in many publications in high-impact journals, see
