Job announcements relevant to people interested in electronic structure calculations…

Due to the large number of posts recently, there is currently a delay of several weeks between posts being submitted and the corresponding emails being distributed to all users. Please bear with us while we try to improve this. In the meantime – and until this notice is removed – it would assist us considerably if you could submit only important and/or urgent posts and thus help to reduce the size of the mail queue. Under no circumstances should you resend posts multiple times when you find the emails are not distributed immediately.

In light of the Russian military offensive in Ukraine, we request that announcements relating to events, jobs and other activities associated with institutions supported by the Russian and Belarusian states are not posted to the Psi-k forum.

We offer a 3-year PhD position at the University of Trieste, Italy, co-funded by the Department of Physics with funds MUR PRIN 2022, project “QUBOP - QUest for BOron Phosphide”.

Boron phosphide (BP) is a novel, theoretically predicted flat semiconductor that presents most of the requested physical and chemical properties for the next-generation more efficient optoelectronic devices. In particular, it constitutes a promising counterpart of silicon, possibly outperforming other state-of-the-art 2D semiconductors. The PhD research project, under the supervision of Maria Peressi, aims at predicting by quantum mechanical numerical simulations the electronic and optical properties of single-layer BP grown on different supports, in close collaboration with experimental teams from the University of Trieste, Materials Foundry of the National Research Council (CNR-IOM), Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste.

Applicant profile

We look for qualified candidates with Master's degree in physics, chemistry, material sciences, or related, with good English communication and autonomous learning ability skills. Previous experience in electronic structure calculations or atomistic simulations is highly desirable.

Funding & Salary

The net salary is about 1200 EUR/month, which allows a good living standard in Trieste. The cost of living and real estate in Trieste is moderate and the quality of life excellent.

We offer funding for the participation at summer schools, conferences and workshops.
