it is a pleasure to announce the Conference : What about U? - Effects of Hubbard Interactions and Hundʼs Coupling in Solids to be held at the Abdus Salaam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Trieste on October 17-21 2016. The Conference is also supported by Psi-k and SISSA.

Purpose and Topics: The focus of the conference are the novel phenomena arising from strong electron-electron correlations when the more familiar “Hubbard U”  conspire with a large spin-orbit coupling and/or Hund’s exchange interaction to produce new correlation effects. In the last few years innovative paradigms have been developed to understand the wealth of novel phenomena observed in iron-based superconductors, iridates or rhutenates. The conference will showcase these concepts and the comparison between theoretical/computational and experimental results.

The main objective of the conference will be the further development of electronic structure methods able to capture the new paradigms and to provide a reliable description of the properties of 3d, 4d, and 5d transition metal compounds from first principles, following two previous successful “What about U?” workshops held in Lausanne in 2012 and 2014.

There is no registration fee and limited funds  are available to support some young participants who are nationals and working in a developing country.
