Dear Colleagues,

we are pleased to announce the Winter School "Computational Magnetism" to be held February 20-24 at the Vienna University of Technology. The school is an initiative of the SFB ViCoM (Vienna Computational Materials Laboratory) funded by the Austrian Science Foundation FWF and is organized by Lilia Boeri, Cesare Franchini, Peter Mohn and Alessandro Toschi.

The school, geared towards graduate students and postdocs in physics, chemistry, and materials science, provides the participants with the  basic foundations of magnetism in condensed matter, and a practical introduction to ab initio methods (DFT and DMFT) for modelling magnetic materials developed within the ViCoM (VASP, Wien2k, TRIQS).

Topics covered in the morning lectures: basic principles (theory and experiments), effective models, relativistic effects, advanced ab-initio methods for magnetism, novel materials and applications.

The lectures will be given by:

  • Gustav Bihlmayer, Research Center Juelich (Germany)
  • Stephen Blundell (Oxford, UK)
  • Luca de' Medici, CNRS Grenoble (France)
  • George Jackeli, Max-Planck-Institute for Solid State Research, Stuttgart, (Germany)
  • Erik Koch, Research Center Juelich (Germany)
  • Juergen Kuebler, TU Darmstadt, (Germany)
  • Igor I. Mazin, Naval Research Lab, Washington DC, (USA)
  • Silvia Picozzi, Universita' dell'Aquila, (Italy)
  • Antonio Sanna, Max-Planck-Institute for Microstructure Physics, Halle (Germany)
  • Stefano Sanvito, University College Dublin (Ireland)

The tutorials will be organized by:

  • Markus Aichhorn, TU Graz (TRIQS)
  • Peter Blaha, TU Wien (Wien2k)
  • Cesare Franchini, Uni Wien (VASP)

The Winter School will take place at the Vienna University of Technology, located in the center of Vienna. Participants can book their accommodation at any of the hotels listed on the school web page.

The school fee of 100 euros (non-refundable) will cover meals, lectures, tutorials, lunches and coffee breaks, social dinner and excursion. Limited travel and accommodation support can be offered for a few participants, upon request.
