Understanding non-equilibrium systems is a challenge that is central to a wide variety of problems across the spectrum of physical, mathematical, biological and environmental sciences. Such systems are typically irreversible, e.g. because they dissipate energy pumped in from the outside, or age very slowly towards a stationary state that may never be reached. They also frequently exhibit extreme events such as cascades of collective failure. In contrast to phenomena at, or close to, equilibrium, our understanding of non-equilibrium systems is still in its infancy.

Purpose
The CONES Conference will bring together leading experts on non-equilibrium systems to discuss the latest advances around the topics of

Fluctuations, Rare Events and Non-Stationary Dynamics

It will provide a forum for progress within disciplines, while at the same exploring broader cross-disciplinary questions such as:
- What are the common challenges in Non-Equilibrium Systems?
- What insights, methods and questions can be transferred between disciplines?

Format
The CONES Conference will feature keynotes and contributed lectures on non-equilibrium systems in three strands focussing on classical and quantum systems, biological systems and environmental dynamics.
All three days of the meeting will feature plenary sessions alongside these thematic strands, to stimulate discussions on unifying ideas, problems and questions. A poster session will also bring all three strands together, to provide further scope for cross-disciplinary interaction; posters will be on display throughout the conference.

Programme
For a list of confirmed and invited speakers please visit the conference website.

Venue
The CONES Conference will take place in central London, in the inspiring setting of Goodenough College.

Key Dates
Registration (register here) will close on 20 June 2016. Delegates wishing to contribute a talk or poster should submit an abstract by 31 May 2016 to canes@kcl.ac.uk.

Contact details
The CONES Conference is an initiative of the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in "Cross-Disciplinary Approaches to Non-Equilibrium Systems" (CANES). For any enquiries please contact the CANES Centre Manager at canes@kcl.ac.uk.
