Dear colleagues,

We would like to draw your attention to the F09 symposium "Modelling-augmented experiment: tuning material properties via defects" at the upcoming MSE 2022 conference (https://dgm.de/mse/). This meeting is planned as a hybrid event and will be held in 27-29 September 2022, in Darmstadt, Germany.

In this symposium, we aim at bringing together theoreticians and experimentalists who think about defects (e.g. vacancies, decorated dislocations, or precipitates at grain boundaries) not as a necessarily harmful feature, but instead as a degree to tune the material performance.

Please note the abstract submission deadline on February 28, 2022!

We are looking forward to your contributions!
David Holec (Montanuniversität Leoben, Austria) and
Paul Mayrhofer (TU Wien, Austria)

Detailed symposium description:
Modelling and simulation are well-established parts of modern science to obtain desirable materials. In many situations, however, these techniques are not standing parallel to experimental methods, but instead, represent possibilities to augment them by providing atomistic insights in bonding and structural characteristics and allowing for isolating certain phenomena. Point defects, in particular vacancies, are a nice example as these are very difficult to detect experimentally. Yet they influence many material properties such as physical, mechanical, thermodynamical or electronic/bonding and phase stability. This symposium aims at demonstrating the variety of properties achievable by different content and arrangement of defects in functional materials. By sharing knowledge of modelling, synthesis and characterisation experts we want to alter from “unwanted defects” to an “effective tuning mechanism of real materials” paradigm.

Dear all,

The abstract submission deadline for MSE has been extended till March 15, 2022. Please consider submitting an abstract (in particular to the symposium F09: "Modelling-augmented experiment" 🙂 for this hybrid event taking place in September 2022!

With kind regards,
David Holec
