Dear colleagues,

We are happy to announce the virtual ICTP mini workshop "2D materials for
spin-orbitronics" which will take place in the afternoons (CEST time) of 3-5 May
2021. The deadline for the registration is 23 April. The link to apply (no fee) is
here: http://indico.ictp.it/event/9607/

This mini workshop will cover selected spin-orbit phenomena in low-dimensional
materials, comprising their potential and concrete realizations for spin-orbitronics, mostly from the computational-materials perspective, but
including also experimental view and results. Low-dimensional materials provide
a fertile ground for generating interesting spin-orbit phenomena and are also ideal
for incorporation in devices. The presentations will span the range from basic
features to the forefront results in the field and are targeting final-year graduate
students and early-career researchers in general. The talks will include the speakers’
views of the current trends, challenges and future directions in their fields and
will be followed by discussion sessions.

In the first afternoon, the properties and the potential of two-dimensional materials
(graphene-based van-der-Waals heterostructures and transition-metal dichalcogenides) for
spin-orbitronics will be described. This will be followed by two afternoons each with a
special focus: skyrmions and exotic magnetism followed by spin-orbit torque in low-dimensional
materials, the latter of which will be presented from the theoretical and experimental
point of view.
Speakers:
S. BLÜGEL, Forschungszentrum Jülich, Germany
J. FABIAN, University of Regensburg, Germany
P. GAMBARDELLA, ETH Zürich, Switzerland
B. NIKOLIC, University of Delaware, USA
S. PICOZZI, CNR-SPIN Chieti, Italy
O. YAZYEV, EPFL Lausanne, Switzerland

Best wishes,
Natasa Stojic (ICTP), Nadia Binggeli (ICTP) and Federica Bondino (IOM-CNR)
