The first International Symposium and Workshop “Electronic Structure Theory for the Accelerated Design of Structural Materials” is organized by Prof. Igor Abrikosov (Linköpings University, Sweden), Prof. Joerg Neugebauer (Max-PlanckInstitut für Eisenforschung, Germany) and Prof. Nicola Marzari (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne). It takes place in Moscow at the National University of Science and Technology "MISIS” from 26-30 October 2015.

The aim of the meeting is to assess the state of the art in applications of the electronic structure theory for the knowledge-based design of structural materials. Particularly the conference will focus on the physical principles of accelerated materials design, the need to significantly reduce the number of approximations in theoretical calculations, to explicitly treat in computer simulations conditions at which materials operate, and to promote direct interaction between theory and experiment. We will discuss challenges in applications of the novel techniques within the field for simulations of materials properties at most realistic conditions in which they operate in tools and devices, e.g. in the presence of electronic, vibrational and magnetic excitations, structural and chemical disorder. A key question will be whether we can shorten significantly the time it takes to discover advanced materials and to prove their usefulness for the commercial market.

The format will consist of presentations followed by discussions and focused Discussion Sessions.
