Announcements of conferences, workshops, schools…

Due to the large number of posts recently, there is currently a delay of several weeks between posts being submitted and the corresponding emails being distributed to all users. Please bear with us while we try to improve this. In the meantime – and until this notice is removed – it would assist us considerably if you could submit only important and/or urgent posts and thus help to reduce the size of the mail queue. Under no circumstances should you resend posts multiple times when you find the emails are not distributed immediately.

In light of the Russian military offensive in Ukraine, we request that announcements relating to events, jobs and other activities associated with institutions supported by the Russian and Belarusian states are not posted to the Psi-k forum.

Dear Psi-k community,

We are pleased to announce the 2023 Electronic Structure Workshop, which is finally coming to the University of California, Merced (the newest campus of the UC system) as had been originally planned in 2020. Registration is now open. Logistical details below.

Dates: June 13-16, 2023

Location: University of California, Merced campus, in Merced, CA, USA

Schedule:

- Tuesday: June 13 – arrival and check in; welcome reception from 5-6 pm; optional activities 7-9 pm:

(1) Hands-on tutorial on the Real-space MultiGrid (RMG) code, led by Jerry Bernholc, Emil Briggs, and Wenchang Lu (NCSU). RMG is a full-featured DFT/hybrid-DFT code that reached the same average accuracy as plane-wave codes. It scales from workstations to exascale supercomputers (Frontier, Summit, Perlmutter) and uses all CPU cores and all GPUs in each node.
(2) Hands-on workshop on the MIT Computational Nanoscience Toolkit on NSF-funded nanoHUB.org, led by David Strubbe (UC Merced). A pedagogical GUI for DFT, molecular dynamics, and Monte Carlo simulations, useful for condensed-matter physics courses, Course-based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CUREs), and outreach or Broader Impact activities.
(3) Wikipedia-editing session, to improve electronic-structure-related articles.

- Wednesday: June 14 -- talks all day

- Thursday: June 15 --  talks in the morning and afternoon; poster session and lunch; banquet at local vineyard

- Friday: June 16 --  talks in the morning; workshop ends at 1 pm

Workshop website: https://physics.ucmerced.edu/electronic-structure-workshop

The website has forms where you can register for the workshop and submit a poster abstract. We encourage everyone who attends to present a poster!

While this is not a hybrid meeting, some limited virtual participation will be possible for those unable to attend in person, and a virtual registration link is also provided on the website.

We look forward to seeing you in Merced, June 13-16, 2023!

Sincerely,

David Strubbe
