Applications are invited for a Research Associate to work in the group of Drs Furio Cora, Ben Slater and Martijn Zwijnenburg in the Department of Chemistry at University College London. The appointee will work in a multidisciplinary team to develop new integrated computational and experimental approaches to the discovery of new inorganic, hybrid and organic materials and identify new materials in energy, information processing, and catalysis.

The postholder will focus in particular on the study of advanced functional materials by computational methods. He/she will computationally screen new ferroic, multiferroic, thermoelectric and catalytically active materials. Specific activities will include the calculation of magnetoelectric coupling, electronic and ionic transport in bulk materials and at interfaces, thermoelectric figures of merit, and the development and benchmarking of computational descriptors.

The position is funded through a prestigious EPSRC Programme Grant, and the appointment will be for a period of 30 months initially.

The successful candidate will have a PhD degree in Chemistry or in a relevant subject area, in depth knowledge of electronic structure calculations applied to exotic electronic states, electronic localisation and/or electronic transport in complex solids, and working knowledge on the simulation of defects and doping in functional materials. He/she will have a strong publication track record, a demonstrated commitment to excellence, and exceptional skills in computational materials science. They will be expected to work in a highly multidisciplinary collaborative team, and have effective communication skills.

Please note, appointment at Grade 7 (salary £33,686 - £40,716 per annum) is dependent upon having been awarded a PhD; if this is not the case, initial appointment will be at Research Assistant Grade 6 (salary £29,485 - £31,091 per annum) with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis.
