Project description: The ability to control a materials electric, optic or magnetic properties is central to modern technology. In this project we develop and apply theory and computational methods for coherent control of quantum states in materials. Aided by the a quantum mechanical description of the interaction between ultra-fast laser pulses and the materialsmatter, we can simulate how the materials properties are affected by coherent light. Of special interest is materials with strongly correlated degrees of freedom, which are known to be very sensitive to external stimuli. Methods used within the project involve time-dependent density functional theory in conjunction with molecular dynamics, as well as dynamic mean-field theory. In close collaboration with experimental research groups we will study how materials change on the quantum level, and how the materials macroscopic properties can be influenced with minimum energy loss.
